The gastroenterology consultant teams provide a mix of ward cover on acute sites, supporting the Emergency floor with specialist care, perform daily board and ward rounds of patients on the specialist GI / hepatology ward supporting the delivery of SAFER. The team are supported by a compliment of specialist registrars, SHOs and FY1 doctor. In addition to gastroenterology inpatient ward rounds, the post holder will perform OPD clinics per week and general endoscopy lists, plus a session dedicated to a specialist interest. Expertise in ERCP for one of the posts available would be welcomed and one session per week will be dedicated to this for the appropriate individual. The post holder may be expected to fulfil some of their clinical commitments on other sites in the Trust.

MAIN PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE JOB: Consultants are expected to practice at an advanced level and are able to demonstrate the following: An expert practice function:The Consultant must be able to deliver high quality care to patients, enable other practitioners to maintain professional expertise, and to be able to demonstrate a high degree of professional autonomy within their role of a specialist within palliative care. The Consultant will develop or maintain an area of specialist interest and support the Medical Director and the wider executive team with the realisation of the Pilgrims Hospices clinical strategy. This includes the development of clinical policies, standard operating procedures and guidelines; collaboration with relevant external stakeholders and specialists in that topic and the development and support of working parties and champions at the hospice. Specialist interests might include non-malignant conditions and widening access to minority groups. Education, training and development function:The Consultant will contribute to the training and education of others, establishing formal links with local education providers. They should also contribute to the development of an education plan for both internal and external staff to encourage learning and to support income generation. Professional leadership and consultancy function: The Consultant should be able to demonstrate leadership skills which will support and motivate others, in order to continuously improve quality of care and standards of practice. They should be a source of expertise and knowledge for others in their specialist fields. Nurse Consultants will work aligned with the Medical Consultants and their job description will mirror each other except for areas where legal distinctions such as supervision of colleagues in training, prescribing of medication and similar, become relevant. The medical consultants are expected to act as clinical Supervisors for medical trainees and become Educational Supervisors for trainees of higher training grades (SpRs). Practice, service development, research and evaluation: Consultants will contribute to development of professional practice, through the promotion of evidence based practice and audits of standards of care. To be an authoritative expert assessor/advisor on pain and symptom management , psychological /spiritual/ social /practical and ethical decisions at the end of life and to work in partnership with a range of health professionals to improve their skills in these areas. Develop and conduct skilled medical intervention with patients with palliative care needs, assessing and addressing issues such as quality of life, futility, prognosis, withdrawing and withholding treatment and end of life decision making within an ethical framework. To undertake complex and sensitive holistic care assessments and plan, implement and evaluate care utilising advanced communication skills. Your opportunity.....As a GMC registered Consultant, you’ll play a vital role in a progressive and forward-thinking East Kent Critical Care team. East Kent Critical Care operates across three units: Kent and Canterbury Hospital (8 beds), Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital, Margate (9 beds), and the William Harvey Hospital (24 beds). This post, including on-call commitments, is based at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital, although sessions on other sites are available if requested.

Our Critical Care team boasts some exciting special interests across our three units. There’s a strong focus on critical care ultrasonography, with state-of-the-art equipment supporting focused echocardiography and bedside ultrasonography. Our consultants include accredited CUSIC and FICE mentors, plus two FICE supervisors. We have high spec ultrasound equipment available on all units, and have recently successfully procured a brand-new state of the art echo machine as well as a cutting-edge echo and ultrasound training mannequin with training modules for transthoracic and transoesophageal echo as well as lung and abdominal ultrasound (including a COVID lung ultrasound module). We also have an interest in advanced ventilation modes such as APRV and Intellivent ASV, and run regular advanced ventilation workshops. Outreach and a Critical Care Rehabilitation service are well established, and we are well supported by a full complement of allied health professionals.

This post offers the opportunity to show clinical expertise in a variety of different areas. It is a well supported role with a cohesive team of nurses, OTs, Psychologists, Assistant Psychologists and Mental Health Wellbeing Practitioners. There are opportunities for teaching, management and QI.

Staff are currently being trained in Open Dialogue which is a new way of working and has so far brought a refreshing change of perspective for staff working in the CMHT. This new approach is likely to lead to improved wellbeing for both staff and patients.

• Provide medical input as required to patients under care of the Community Mental Health Team and will attend CPAs for enhanced patients and provide urgent assessment/advice as required.
• Lead regularly on screening of new referrals to the team (rotational responsibility between the Consultants).
• The post holder would be expected to actively participate in service/team evaluation and the planning of future service developments.
• Empowers the team to resolve local issues on a daily basis using the tools and method of quality improvement without staff having to seek permission.
• To manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between consultant colleagues and the medical director and in accordance with the Trust’s personnel policies and procedures. This may include assessing competences under the Modernising Medical Careers framework.
• To participate in service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service.
• The postholder will join the Consultant on-call rota. This is currently 1:30 (non residential) and is remunerated with a 3% category A supplement and 0.5 PA in addition to 10 PA sessions.
